Chapter 6: Serena

What was I supposed to do, other than show up on Sunday at my contracted time?

I would clean as scheduled.

I was honestly shocked and mortified at how I’d spoken to Theo when he caught me off guard at Daily Brew Cafe. Seeing him outside of Eternal Tattoo Shop, at a place that I'd been going to for years before he’d ever moved here, had emboldened me somehow.

How he had so casually invited me to eat lunch together after the way he touched me last weekend, knowing exactly what it did to me. He must have known how I felt about him but was playing it off like nothing serious.

Business as usual.

That might as well be his shop’s motto.

Business as usual, no matter how many times he'd made me blush. No matter what kindness he showed me when he didn't need to. No matter the gentle, firm way he’d handled me when applying that stencil. It was always going to be business as usual.

But then he wanted to be… friends? I couldn't do it. It was too much, and hopefully, he understood that now. Hopefully, we would continue on business as usual.

If not, I decided, depending on how today went, I would finish out working off my debt for him, but that was it. As soon as I’d finished, I’d call Coast Cleaning Co. and let them know I needed to end the contract.

Taking a deep breath and putting on my best professional, polite smile, I knocked on the door.

Theo let me in. He looked tired. “Come on in,” he said.

“Thank you.”

At this point, I didn’t need to ask him a thing. I knew what needed to be done and the order in which it needed doing. So, I immediately popped in my earbuds and got to work.

Theo stayed out of my way, up by the lobby counter facing the windows overlooking the street. He was typing something on his laptop, staying busy.

Good.

I made my way to the bathroom, which was honestly still quite clean, but I took my time. Being thorough was satisfying and helpful to keep my mind busy. Finally, I moved back into the open area of the shop and looked for anything else to do before I got started on the floors.

I saw a new stack of canvases laying on the floor underneath the gallery wall and picked them up to put them on the table so they wouldn’t be in the way when I vacuumed.

A loose piece of sketchbook paper slipped out, floating to the floor. I set down the frames on the nearest counter and reached down to pick up the sketch, flipping it over.

I gasped. It was immediately recognizable as me, but it was me in a way I had never seen myself before. Me through someone else's eyes.

The sketch was mostly in black and gray ink, expertly capturing my features, my hair practically floating around me. I was wearing the dress I'd worn on Tuesday, painted with a bright yellow wash.
